It's supposed to be 18 here tonight.  I don't have anything like enough 
covers to protect everything.  The early blooming magnolias in the area have 
already been ruined.  The average daily temperature has been well below 
normal over the past several weeks.  That may help with the irises.  My main 
concern is the loss of so many daffodil blooms and tender new growth on mums. 
 

The soil in the seedling pots have stayed cold to the touch and should be 
okay without protection.  And here I was, thinking we'd earned a 'nice' 
spring!

Does anyone remember when the stalks on irises start to extend and what 
stages provide the most chance of damage?  Let's see . . . is the memory the 
first thing to go or the last thing to go?
