I'm trying to figure this "groups" thing out but am
eager to make my presence known. I've asked for
assistance, (nothing makes me feel as stupid as
computers!) but while waiting, I'm giving this a try.
So, greetings all from the sunny and warm Texas hill
country where the temp is having trouble getting out
of the forties and it won't stop raining!
I have a garden that I call Spicewood Gardens, (I live
in Spicewood) and I sell irises locally, mostly. I
belong to the Iris Society of Austin, the AIS and the
TBIS. I grow a lot of LAs in big tubs and intend to
join their society also. I am interested in Arils,
have grown a few but they seem to have trouble with
our notorious late freezes after weeks of warm
weather. I met Louella Danielson at last year's AIS
Convention and again last month at the ISA Meeting and
I'm hoping to order some from her, this year. Her
choice, since I want them all. I hope some of the
advice here will help them do well.
Afternoon Delight is blooming and old Bronco Brown
will be open in a day or two if it sees some sun. It
is usually my earliest one. I also have stalks on Tea
Leaves, Hello Darkness, Mesmerizer, Lipstick, Mary
Frances, Pacific Belle, Ruffled Copper Sunset, Gene
Machine, Shurton Inn, Yes Ma'am and Olympiad. This
is, the last time I looked. It's awfully wet out
there right now. All our creeks are flooded. I'm
very fortunate that I have very good drainage and am
the envy of the Austin club members in that I have NO
rot. And we have no Borers in our area. But there
are still slugs, snails, aphids, cut worms,
grasshoppers, leaf spot and armadillos. Enough to
keep us very busy and lead to occasional heartbreak.
I also have a few seedlings growing but nothing to
report on them. My one little stab at hybridizing.
So, that's it folks. My LAs have many stalks showing
but I can't name them until they bloom.
