Re: Edith Wolford and DMs

Please consider the garden in which Edith Wolford and at least one of her parents originated. Winters are cool and wet, not cold and snowy. Spring and summer watering by flooding between rows. Complete soil fertility and neutral to a little alkaline pH. Rhizomes transplanted every year, not every second, third or fourth year. Hot, hot summers with full sun and no rain.
The extent to which a given garden's climate and cultural practices are different is directly proportional to chances of growing it well. EW is in many ways a hybridizers iris. Where others in this color class were yellow standards over falls which were to a greater or lesser extent violet, EW got rid of every trace of yellow in the falls which was responsible for the violet tint resulting in the truest blue yet.

Let us remember that the Dykes Medal is not awarded to the variety with a majority of the votes, but the one with the most votes. As a result nearly every DM is awarded by a minority of judges.
