I agree. SM is one of my most favorite irises too, especially for
that dark ruby red-black glow you mentioned.

Very true again! The individual colors are soft & subtle, but very
impressive in a nice clump especially after a soft rain.
I don't grow any of the other cultivars you mentioned, but a few of
my other favorites are CAJUN SUNRISE (Louisiana), CLOSE CONTACT
(Arilbred), and I'd have to think hard to narrow down the list to my
Top-10. Basically I love whatever happens to be in bloom. :)
