Re: Re: AIS: 2002 Dykes

I know that three siberian clumps isn't enough to judge by, but I have had no trouble growing these and they bloom well for me. I also have about 18 seedlings coming along
that look about old enough to bloom this year. I was told several years ago how very hard they were to grow and that the only way was to grow some from seed. That hasn't proven to be true so far. I just treat them like LAs.

It's a shame that SIBs, JIs, PCNs, MTBs & most SDBs just don't grow
well, if at all, in a lot of the southern tier of states. It makes it harder
for sunbelt dwelling judges to see, much less vote for these admittedly
wonderful irises.
I have tried, and keep trying to grow some of them to evaluate, but is rare
to find one that will live, much less bloom.
The bias towards TBs, whether deserved or not, has to stem from the
fact they are more widely grown - simply because they will thrive in very
diverse climates and conditions. While many of the beardless and medians are
deserving of an award, if they simply won't grow at all here, it's hard to
vote for them over a TB that grows beautifully for me here in the desert AND
that I've seen growing just as well in Pennsylvania.
(By the way, Queen's Circle and Swing and Sway fit this description!)
