AIS: regions, registration & intro books

I keep forgetting that there are a lot of iris lovers on this list who
aren't AIS members or don't know what some of this stuff is. Apologies!

The American Iris Society is divided up into 20+ regions that correspond
to state boundaries. Each is headed up by a regional vice president
(RVP). Most are made up of several states. Region 7 is Kentucky
Tennessee. This isn't the same thing as growing/climate zone 7. Some
of Region 7 is as cold as zone 6 or maybe even 5? and approaches zone 8
in other places.

I think that the regions are indicated on the AIS website, or maybe the
names of the local clubs with their addresses so you can figure out
which part of the country they are in.

I also got an offlist question about the registration and introduction
publications. For the seriously obsessed iris nut, these are really
nice to have. Every year, descriptions of all the newly registered
irises are published in a little paperback book and every 10 years,
those are compiled into a hardback volume, sorted alphabetically. The
descriptions are more detailed in the more recent publications than in
the ones from the 30s & 40s. All of them include parentage if it was
known. The yearly publications and the 10 yr compilations are available
for sale - probably says where on the AIS website
<http://www.irises.org>
I think that's the right webaddress.

aaannnddd... some dedicated people are working away to get the
checklists all into electronic form.
