Hello all,
I am brand new to the group here and obviously love iris - who doesn't - right?
Anyways, one of my questions is if anyone knows what companion plants do best with irises. I've got most of my 25 x 50 city garden with companion vegetables, but when it comes to irises, I don't know what helps them grow insofar as other plants.
I have a few different varieties and I love them dearly. Unfortunately quack grass (sp?) has taken over my one garden patch and also a HUGE ant hill seems to like it there too. I hate using pesticides but I had to break down last year and buy some ant stuff because they were popping up everywhere because I'm one of the few people on my block that doesn't believe in that stuff. Yup I'm down on my hands and knees weeding. My mom believes in using a hoe. Well, that's almost sacralege too! Still leaves a bunch of roots in.
Every second year I will use a little bit of perennial fertilizer on my irises but I figure nature knows best. I have seen that companion gardening seems to work not badly and follow the Carrots loves Tomatoes book fairly well.
I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, so if you could recommend a companion plant for irises, I would greatly appreciate it.
Janet
