I'm not sure just how wide the range is.  It is a disease and my
understanding is that it is really more prevalent in the mid-west states -
Texas up through Kansas way rather than in the south.  I think Arnold
Koekkoek has had it occasionally?  Arnold, is my memory correct here?  When
it occurs, it seems quite arbitrary on which plants are affected and which
escape.  Not a lot is known on just exactly how it works, I think.  It is
presumably spread by vectors (aphids or something), but I don't know what
the cooking time is for it to make an appearance.  I certainly had aphids
this winter, but they seemed restricted to my arilbreds, not this plant and
were far away from this plant.  So far as I know, this plant has never been
infested with aphids in its life here.  I do check because of the tendency
of the arilbreds to collect colonies of them.  I have seen them on other
bearded irises as well, but not too often.  So, if this does prove to be
scorch, I'm wondering when the plant was actually infected.  This winter,
last fall, earlier?  How long does it take for the lethal symptoms to appear
in other words.  By the time it is visible, there has not been anything that
is really worthwhile trying to salvage a plant.  It would have to be a
valued plant that would be difficult for me to replace before I'd try saving
a scorch victim again.
