My ISP uses Postini to filter spam. Re Yahoo it has been a problem in two
ways. The first was when the ISP first implemented Postini, it did
misidentify a lot of Group mail as spam. At that time, the ISP was not
allowing an individual to view and select for delivery the messages being
trapped. The result was a lot of gaps in threads since some of the mail was
being filtered. That frustrated me until they opened Postini to individual
users. So now, as Ellen says, I can see what has been trapped and have
legitimate mail delivered to the mailbox and trash the spam. As such, it
does an excellent job and I don't miss mail. So when applied as it is now,
that problem is resolved.
The other problem is that ALL incoming mail to our ISP MUST come through the
filter or it is bounced. This has been a reoccurring problem. The fellows
at the ISP told me Yahoo did this, but Yahoo continually denied it (sort
of - if form emails count). However, several weeks ago when I went on
bounce status and was checking, Yahoo gave the delivery attempt address.
They had sent it directly, not through the Postini filter. One message, one
bounced email and they promptly put me on bounce status. All you can do
then is go through the Yahoo steps of reinstating your mail. In the
meantime, you will not receive Group mail. If they send it through Postini,
then it will work fine. If they send it direct, the bounce status will
promptly be back in place with no mail from the Groups.
The folks at my ISP say when Yahoo sends mail directly to the ISP, they are
not following standardized methods of sending email...and that they know
that. Thus they deny doing so and blame the ISP. I wasn't ever sure until
Yahoo itself gave the reason for the bounce and spilled the beans on
themselves. I don't suppose there's any solution. A form letter is not
much of a direct response, in my opinion. Since they deny it, I doubt
they'll address the issue.
Since this group moved, only one mail sent has bounced. John notified me,
but by the time he had done I had already received several posts from the
group. I checked the archives and it was the only post missing. I did
nothing. So far as I know no further emails have bounced and the one
appears to be an aberration from the norm. Much, much easier than trying to
get reinstated with Yahoo.
