I think there could be some basis to the "old wive's tale". I have a lot
of old plants (regretably mostly unnamed) that are extremely tough and
enduring in my climate (climate could matter a lot here), and most (not
all) of them have PBF. On the other hand, I lost a whole bunch of new
plants last year to bad timing when I planted them I think (weather, heat,
etc.) and they were nearly all strongly influenced by I. variegata blood.
Nearly all of these had PBF too. Perhaps if they would have established
though, they may have turned into really tough enduring plants.
