If by chance they do germinate and sprout, the mowing may not hurt them.
Just start looking for rhizomes growing down there.
I've seen people who groomed their beds with a lawn mower, they would
just mow them down at the end of season. The iris would come back with
new foliage and bloom every spring.
Also I heard a story of a well known hybridizer who would thin his rows 
with a roto-tiller.
