This not gardening heaven in any season. Irises do much better overall than
most other garden plants. Indeed, in this area, many make no attempt at
much gardening. The rule of thumb is a 'more or less lawn', a few shrubs,
trees....and often a clump or so of 'gimme' irises of the grandmother sort
and leave it be. In town, of course you see more attempts at more show.
Usually in the form of more varieties of shrubs and highly cared for lawns,
not temperamental perennials.
