My numbering system is quite similar. I don't assign the numbers when I make
the cross simply because so many don't survive. I wait until I harvest seed to
assign the number for the year and placement numbers.

My placement number is the same as your cross number except that I enter all
the year's viable crosses on an Excel sheet and sort by pod parent. They sort
out with seedlings (pod) first and then the few crosses made onto named
varieties fall at the end of the list in alphabetical order. Year and placement
becomes the permanent number (1502) followed by the dash.

From this point on, I only number the keepers, usually those that rebloom! I
used this system before I had a computer, but it's much easier now. Not as
many do overs!

Keepers are usually numbered according to bloom sequence, except that I only
number those with breeding value, etc. Most of the compost heap is never
numbered, with the exception of the reselects that didn't make it to introduction.
