Hmm, well, of course (she says)....pretty obvious when you put it like
that John <g>.  Even I have produced enough compost to have observed
this first hand.

I was having trouble understanding why, but it does make sense.  I
think. ? The improvements are always out at the edge of what's possible,
but are still combinations of genes from their less improved parents and
still less improved grandparents, etc.

Especially with four of everything interacting...

But like you say, Neil, it's not always true.  Every now and then there
is a cross with quite a few sibs that are worthy.  I've seen several
from Blyth.  But I guess those sibs could be from many pods of the same
cross, therefore still only a few selected from thousands of seedlings.
