Lcd viewing screens are battery burners. They do show more accurately what will be in the final picture but cut battery life in half. My daughters Nikon Coolpix 2100 has no manual settings but has a dozen or so presets for Very bright , bright, cloudy, night time, indoors etc. Macro lens to 1.5" and in camara cropping, red eye adjustments. Cute outlines for centering one or two people, but with only two batteries she is lucky to get 20 minutes per set. The newer version is about $ 200.00.
The memory card in the camera can be reused almost indefinitely, and is easy to switch out in the field, on the run. Having an extra one or two, plus a supply of batteries in the ditty bag, fanny pouch or purse--whichever one has for "stuff,"-- is a good idea when at a convention or large garden so one is not limited to the number of images acquired at the site.

Our pictures are from a Nikon Coolpix 990 on auto setting. The Sonys with the optional Zeiss lens such as Mike Sutton uses give very sharp images.
2 megapixels is enough up to 8 X 10. 3 megapixels with a good lens will give you better images than 5 with a so-so lens.
Be sure to visit the sites that let you compare the same picture taken with different camaras.
