A year or so ago we helped out a friend who'd just bought a new home with her landscaping by planting some unknown historic iris in part of her front yard. Many of the rhizomes (most of which started out pretty small) didn't survive the almost total lack of care they received, but a significant percentage of them thrived.
We drove by her house yesterday, and saw a magnificent bloomstalk on one of them - an old-fashioned purple bitone with large flowers. The stalk was 40-something inches high, with *18* buds! I think that's the most I've ever seen on one stalk - our previous record was a 13-bud Souvenir de Madame Gaudichau stalk my housemate Gesine grew last year.
Let's hear it for unknown historics that thrive on neglect!
What's the largest bud count you've ever seen?
Jean SF bay area, zone 9
