I had too many messages to read and deleted a bunch, so I missed the context
of Bill's comments. As John knows, I do attend many of the AIS Board meetings
and do make suggestions. As a judge, I have to choose between irises that I
have seen growing to vote for awards. This is the one area where I disagree
with current policy. The short length of time that an iris is eligible for the
Honorable Mention award tends to favor large growers who can flood the market
with their introductions. A small, private hybridizer has a much more
difficult time getting his/her iris introductions disseminated to a large number of
judges. Many of these introductions are as worthy of awards as those of the
big-name hybridizers, but never get awards. Beardless irises were granted an
extra year, but other-than-tall bearded irises need more time too.
