RE: Hyb-sweerti

Even though I have my copy of *Garden Irises* out on loan, I have been
reminded that there are two lists with chromosome counts therein--one of iris
species, the other of garden varieties. The latter list appears as a set of
subordinate pages to the HIPS website. The species list does not.

In the Iris species list there is an entry, "I. swertii = 24" which, as a
simple diploid, accounts for the open-pollinated fertility reported by Dave
Ferguson.

The question to what cv "Sweetseri" with the count of 38 refers is a puzzle.

Another chromosome count of 38 is reported in TWOI, p. 10, for *astrachanica*
by Zakharyeva in Russia. I'm not implying there is any connection between
this and SWERTI. I merely found the coincidence interesting.
