Can you share any information on your variegata X suaveolens cross.
I'm looking forward to your information on F2
The low fertility on pallida X variegata seems to be what most people making this cross report.

Dave,
I see what you mean about similarity of my pallida X
variegata F1 and the historic irises you mention. Some
of the links/pictures you posted would fit right in
with my F1. Actually, some look amazingly like
specific seedlings I have. Others I'm guessing are
more advanced generation hybrids (backcrosses and/or
intercrosses), because they show traits that are
closer to one of the parental types and are less like
the F1 that I've seen. It is possible though that by
using different pallida clones and different variegata
clones as parents, one could reproduce almost any of
those types too.
I look forward to seeing what F2 and F3 generations
(from pallida X variegata) might bring. I think, from
my first season's pollinating experience with the F1,
that it might be a difficult undertaking. I wasn't
able to get more than a few seeds. But, I'll be trying
again this year.
I hadn't expected so much infertility after seeing how
easily some other F1 (pallida X suaveolens and
variegata X suaveolens) have set pods.
Tom
