Re: Tough Luminatas
Hi,
Just a note of curiosity. Some of these newer luminatas are spectacular,
and (not having checked), I'm wondering if they are the result of long
lines of inbreeding?
I've not paid too much attention to this thread, but in browsing I notice
mention of poor growers and all the cultivars mentioned were rather modern.
I'm just curious if anyone has done any relatively recent work that
involves re-incorporating the old original luminatas (or their parents)
into the breeding programs? This may not be true for other regions, but
here in central NM, I find that these oldies are extremely tough, mostly
good (though not the fastest) growers, and flower reliably. Admittedly
they are not the best in form and growth habit by modern standards, but it
seems a bit of infusion of "old blood" into the lines of breeding might
give some improvement in plant hardiness, and perhaps add some other
interesting factors?
Some of those I'd include as the "originals" are: 'Moonlit Sea', 'Bertha
Gersdorff', 'Aladdin's Wish', 'Pretty Pansy'.
Dave
