Re: HYB:seedlings

Wow! Congratulations!

So, you're saying that last year you only had 3 seedlings sprout from 2 pots. This year, you have more sprouts by waiting another year for the seeds to germinate.

How many seedlings are sprouted so far for just this year?

Just out of curiosity, how cold do winters get down there in Kentucky? Here in MI, (Zone 4ish) it was 20 below zero F for about a week in Dec/Jan. I'm wondering if that would HELP my seedlings germinate . . . if not, I may plan on holding pots over an extra year. Or just make sure that I put all the left-over soil from the pots in the same row I line out my seedlings in.

Hoping for answers.

I've just spotted my first sprouts of the 2005 spring! They are not from
the 2004 crop but the hold over pots from 2003. Yes, there are more sprouts in
the 1812 pots!

But I'm most happy about 1 1/2 dozen new seedlings from 1810. These pots
(2) produced 3 seedlings last year. One didn't grow and the other two put up
fall stalks, one being that beige over pink (1810-1RE) that I posted to iris
photos last fall. Blue amoena seedling X LIGHT REBUFF. The seedling
contained Victoria Falls, Vanity, Immortality, Glistening Icicle, Latest Style,
Champagne Elegance, & Feed Back. The seedling bloomed in a mum pot, and matured
the pod (52 seed) in that same mum pot!

Linda, these are some of the 2nd year pots we were talking about. It will
be interesting to see how these look in comparison. Not sure if three last
year will be a good enough comparison!

For those interested in sprouting techniques, I plant my seed in mum pots
between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then I wait for spring. Once again, I
didn't have mulch, and I did find a number of seed had surfaced in the 2003 pots.
Not so in the 2004 pots. I pushed them back down, otherwise they will not
sprout. Hope they sprout since I don't really want to hold over for a third
year. (but probably will)
