One of the gardening shows on HGTV the other week/month said that plants that are grown in windy environments tend to be shorter and broader regardless of their genetic potential.
Seems logical, if that plant isn't spending 'enough' time putting roots down it is going to get blown away. If it's busy making roots it's not expending energy making height.

Taller irises suffer more damage.
