I have been interested in this question also. I live in a different
climate from most of you, and for several reasons, for the past three
years I have planted my seeds directly into the ground, bypassing the
potting and transplanting methods. I get as good germination this way
and I believe better seedling survival. The seeds I planted last
November have given me all the way from 20 to 90% germination depending
on the cross. (Of course, one of the ones I wanted most has the poorest
germination.) All of these came up in January. Since then we have had
cycles of hot and cold weather, but no more little seedlings. I have
kept them evenly moist with soaker hoses. We got 1.6" of rain Saturday,
the first drops of sky water in 143 days, since the middle of last
October.
When I planted in pots, I always put the used planting material into a
flower bed where we don't grow irises. In three years of dumping plenty
of ungerminated seeds into it, only one came up. For some reason, seeds
that don't germinate immediately for me just don't.

Linda,
As a rule, I don't keep pots more than two years for my MTB seeds. I
know
that seeds might germinate after that, but it is too hard to keep track
of
all those pots. Often the second year germination will be better than
first, but I normally stop after two years. I might be inclined to keep
a
very promising pot with lots of seeds (50-100) for a third year.

| Trying to get rid of some old pots of ungerminated seeds - easy to
toss
| some now that I've seen enough of the seedlings to know they are
really
| dreadful. !!
|
| How many years do those of you who keep pots more than one year wait
for
| more germination?
|
| I'm thinking the third year will be the last for most of these
crosses,
| might hang onto a few promising or difficult ones a little longer.
