Christian, keep in mind that there are a <lot> of reason any given iris
doesn't make pollen that have nothing to do with it's genetic potential
for making pollen. From what I read, viable pollen production <may> be
one of the first things that doesn't happen when a plant is stressed.
Here, late, severe freezes <before> stalk production, and heavy rainfall
(several inches several days in a row) during bloom season can eliminate
pollen or even anthers on nearly everything, <if> they get hit at just
the wrong point of development.
Those same plants can be pollen fertile another year (or in another
climate). So you might check with someone in iris heaven
(California/Oregon/Oz) to see if the cultivars you are interested in are
pollen fertile elsewhere, maybe find someone who would send you pollen.
Just to increase your possibilities.
I've changed the subject line so it's easier to figure out what the
thread is about for those of us who only read and post from the
archives. Long subject lines don't fit in the archives index and are
truncated to around 30 characters or so. This subject, which started as
< If you could ignore hybridizing barriers...(question) >
shows up in the archive index as
< If you could ignore hybridizing>
....not quite the topic intended! <g>
Gee, if I could ignore hybridizing, I might go do something else, ....
