Notes taken as the crosses are made can be important. Low seed count was a
problem last year. VANISHING ACT X ROMANTIC EVENING only produced 12 seed.
Flipping through last years field records I find this note, "1)pt (this
means one cross attempted on the primary terminal . . .) An additional note says,
"small amount of pollen from 1 split anther!"
This explains the low seed count and tells me it was one of those "just in
case" crosses. The split anther was all I had left, but used it anyway. It
was about half of an anther split lengthwise. It changes my outlook on the
cross!
The reason for the cross could easily have been added but wasn't. "color
and beard." The plan is to take the seedlings back to the plicata side. VA is
a tall strong plicata. Strong most places anyway, except maybe the SOD!
