Re: HYB:CULT: Big enough to liine out.

Christian -- I don't recall where I received the guidance, but the "rule" I go by is that the seedling is ready for transplanting when it has 3 leaves, regardless of size. Arguably, a seedling that is still tiny when it produces 3 leaves will be a small plant in the long run, so don't wait for it to get bigger. That said, I don't transplant my seedlings as soon as they have three leaves. Although I have sprouts up now that have 3 leaves, I won't transplant them until about mid-late May -- and that's if nothing delays me. By then, most will have 5 or more leaves and good, sturdy roots. Depending on whether we get rain, I'll start this week giving them MiracleGro about every 2 weeks until transplanting time. After each watering or rainfall, I sprinkle the pots with epsom salts to keep out the slugs. -- Griff

In the recent thread about seedling strength there has been an underlying theme, what is strong enough to survive line out?

It seems to me, from some of the pictures that have been posted, this week and in the past, that there is quite a bit of difference in how big we are trying to get our seedlings in time to line out.

So lets get specific. How many leaves, how tall, are you looking for a certain landmark of development, or is it every man for himself once the taxes are done?
