Re: HYB: variability of seedling form

Thanks everybody for all the input. Surely there is something in that bunch that would give me some pollen here.

So when you folks say something gives good width, are all the seedlings wider than the narrowest parent? Or about half? Or just a few? Or does it vary all over the place, with some very narrow and some very wide?

I've only made one cross that gave a "large" percentage of wide seedlings - can't think of the pod parent X PEACH SPOT. Three surviving seedlings, two with very wide falls, almost touching, as I recall. Much wider than either parent.

Like Betty, I wasn't able to keep KATHLEEN KAY NELSON (or BLUE JAY WAY, for that matter) alive here, but that was before putting newly imported things in pots of dirty perlite.

And was before these last three unbelievably mild springs! When hardly anything has been frozen out. Some hints that may not be the case this year -- already have seen a few new things with frozen out/rotting terminal fans.

By "mild" I mean both not all that cold, but more importantly, not going back and forth from a week of highs in the 70s to lows in the single digits.

We could use a little rain here too. Spring has definitely sprung - 'wild' daffs & I. reticulata in full bloom.
