William John Caparne


The life of William John Caparne, whose name is memorialized by the  
Caparne-Welch Medal for MDB irises, is the subject of chapter 9 of Classic  Irises and 
the Men and Women Who Created Them. It is only in the last two  decades that 
his genius as an artist has been recognized by major art critics. A  friend of 
mine just sent me information on a wonderful web site that has many of  his 
paintings. If you want to see some paintings of irises, look at the several  
pages under "Horticultural Subjects." One of my favorites is of "persica  
purpurea."  But do not neglect to look at his landscapes and seascapes.  They are
