whee! Thanks so much for digging all this up and summarizing for us, Chuck. Some of it is pretty much backwards from how I'd been thinking about it, esp the part about the closer to amphidiploid being more fertile than those closer to true tets. But the rest matches the impression I had gotten re: mixing in all these species with TBs. I couldn't see how so many of the resulting "tets" were so fertile if they didn't have a lot of matching bits and pieces.
Much to think about esp re: rebloom inheritance and IMM's stubborness, both for producing offspring with comparable rebloom and low seed set/germination.
I've made a lot of IMM crosses (using her for pod) and can only think of two crosses that produced a lot of seeds (and a lot of seedlings). CELEBRATION SONG and HIGH CHAPARRAL. The HC cross was a gift, made in Nebraska, so confounded by climate diffs (but then all of my crosses are confounded by erratic climate here, so maybe that's not relevant). Rhetorical questions - is she somewhat close to true tet? What is it about Csong and High Chap that makes such a good match? Instead of true tet, is she dragging along a greater number of bits and pieces from aphylla (or some other species? or several species?) than most of the things I've crossed her with, and they just aren't matching up well? & to get 'summer' bloom, do I have to get a nearly true amphidiploid with aphylla (assuming aphylla is the source of that type of rebloom) as half? Much to ponder...
