I don't know HOW they do it, but can attest that the bulbs do manage to bury
themselves deeper over time. I planted mine 4-6" deep in very sandy soil.
When I dug them 3 years later, wanting to use that particular bed for some
special seedlings, I found most of the bulbs at 6-9".
