Linda, Japanese irises do not like anything that is at all alkaline.  It may
be that the sea products have an alkaline aspect or a salt content that the
I. ensata does not tolerate.  That is merely a guess on my part.  Re alkaline
problem, even planting next to a concrete foundation or sidewalk can prove
