Dorothy - You were interested in my list of great OGB's which should do well in
the wet zone. Keep in mind these are half-bred OGB's rather than the more
moisture sensitive OGB+'s. They should grow well interplanted with TB's, but
if you have a separate patch for them, keep them a little dryer after bloom
season until Fall growth. These are our favorites: Arabian Archer, Rich 1992;
Babylonian Fires, Rich 1992; Bagdad's Folly, Rich 1992; Bionic Focus, Danielson
1991; Bridesmaid's Apparel, Danielson 1993; Close Contact, Flanagan 1988;
Desert Finery, Rich 1990; Desert Moonlight, Rich 1990; Kalifa's Robe, Hager
1990; Kiosk, Hager 1985; Kuza Nama, Hager 1982; Pro News, Danielson 1983; Sandy
Dandy, Danielson 1985; Step Aside, Danielson 1991; Turkestan, Hager 1985;
Turkish Fez, Hager 1983; Turkish Pendant, Shockey 1990; Zerzura, Hager 1990.
All the above do well in Albuquerque with 9 inches of precip per year. Most of
it is in the summer, not good for pure arils but no problem for half-breds. We
also water them of course, and they thrive. If you have already tried any of
the above with poor results please let me know. No special tips that wouldn't
apply to TB's except be careful to keep aphids under control; arilbreds seem to
attract them somewhat more than TB's. The best idea is to start small with
just a few and see how they do.
Spring was here last weekend but has temporarily departed in favor of a
snowstorm. It should return for the weekend.
