sharon - thanks. i have been avoiding a lot of eastern varieties because of
their short height, but now i see i need to go measure what i have and factor
some height/hybridizer ratio into my choices.
at this rate, i am going to have tried several thousand tall bearded irises
just to find my 'perfect' 25 choices. at least i will be able to supply our
local club with lots of sale iris.
for you small commercial iris growers, what kind of inventory do you sell
each year if you do mail order? maybe thats a better question for another
mail list, tom? a lot of hobby growers around here sell un-named rhizomes
during peak bloom season (they just hack off a chunk with the bloom attached)
for $2 or 3. i keep thinking it would be nice to partially support myself
doing something as fun as growing irises. but it probably seems like a much
better idea right now in this cold weather than it will when it's close to
100oF and 100% humidity in july and time to dig and divide.
