Re: Hybridizing book

:There was a fantastic book on iris hybridizing published in the sixties
:that got me started growing and crossing iris. The woman who wrote it
:had gathered together all the information available, much of it from the
:hybridizing robins. I'm sorry I can't remember the name.

That was Wilma Valette's _Iris Culture and Hybridizing for Everyone_,
a wonderful, chaotic, cluttered inspiration of a book! (And a wonderful
lady--even when she was in her eighties and nearly blind she answered
all her correspondence personally on her trusty typewriter.) Being
culled from robins (rather uncritically), it contains conjecture,
irrelevancy, and occasional misinformation. But there's nothing better
to read to get excited about hybridizing and irises in general. I
read a copy I borrowed from a friend long ago; I wish I could say I
owned one!
