Gunnar, the Historic Iris Preservation Society (HIPS) does not have a genetic
bank, per se. But it does have a data bank of which old cultivars are still
known to survive, and who has reported that they have them. It took me ten
years to locate the famous old iris VIRGINIA MOORE (Shull 1920). This yellow
iris was one of the first to win a major award from the American Iris
Society, and was considered the best yellow in its time. I finally located a
clone of it when Shull's granddaughter came up to me an iris sale and
introduced herself. Since HIPS was founded a decade ago we have been making
great progress...unfortunately, many old distinguished cultivars, including
most of M. Lemon, have been lost forever. Clarence Mahan
