Embryo Culture

On March 17, I sent a note about embryo culture of iris, indicating that this
technique had been used in the past by aril hybridizers, but that no one was
known to be currently active. Since then, I have learned that Harald Mathes,
an Aril Society member living in Germany, does use this technique with good
success. His article on aril iris chromosomes in the Aril Society
International 1995 yearbook, now in press, describes the use of embryo culture
to obtain plants from difficult aril crosses which produced few and small seed.
Although hybridizers have abandoned this technique in the past because it was
somewhat involved, it does have the advantage of radically speeding up the
germination process and allowing germination of seeds which otherwise wouldn't.
With the proliferation of plant culture kits available from biologic supply
houses, the technology may be a lot less cumbersome than it used to be.
Intriguing possibility.
