Monica, I've had very good results using sweet alyssum between the irises.
It starts blooming after the irises finish and goes on and on and on...past
frost. Since the plants are low and shallow-rooted, they don't seem to
compete with the irises at all, and the irises still get the sun and air
they need. It really keeps the iris bed from looking like a graveyard all
summer, which is important in my small garden.
