Jay,
In my experience, I have used alfalfa meal top-dressing in early spring 
as soon as new growth starts, or in the fall after bloom and rebloom; I 
have had very good results with either time of application.  I am also 
curious as to when and how other people apply alfalfa and the kind of 
results they get!
