I also have tried ground alfalfa, the so called "fines" generated by production
of alfalfa pellets as a top dressing around iris plants. The iris did very
well with this although there was no comparative test with other fertilizers.
When I couldn't get the "fines" last year I bought livestock pellets from a
feed store. These are about 1/4 inch diameter and disintegrate much better
than the larger pellets, about an inch in diameter, that are available. I was
cautioned by the supplier that rabbit pellets, which are also made of ground
alfalfa, have a high salt content, which is usually undesirable for gardens.
The livestock pellets were only slightly larger than rabbit chow and do not
have the added salt. They are also somewhat less expensive.
