Monica,
Alfalfa is considered a "wonder" plant by farmers. In addition to using it
as hay for animals, it is used as a green manure rotation crop. It restores
the soil and rebuilds and releases nitrogen....perhaps someone more versed in
the sciences can give you a better technical answer, but that is what I
learned as a boy growing up on a large tobacco and dairy farm in Ohio. Where
to get the alfalfa pellets? Well, feed stores are the best bet. Even though
we are close to Virginia horse country, I can't find a feed store (or a pet
store...alfalfa is also used as rabbit feed) that has the bagged pellets
without a heavy mix with molassas...which I prefer not to use. So I drive up
to York, PA where they make the pellets, and load up 2 tons of bags in my
station wagon and my wife's vanwagon. My suggestion is to check a farmer's
coop if there is one close. If they don't have it they can order it. I get
mine from a place called Ohio Blenders in York, PA. Hope this helps.
