Welcome aboard! Those purple irises were probably bearded irises, which
are not native to Texas. Gardeners have spread them all over the world,
and sometimes they have survived on their own without care for so long
that no one knows just how they got there.
Irises certainly can be a low maintenance plant, but as you'll discover
on this mailing list, some of us are not happy unless we can make it
more difficult.... :)
