Bloom Report

of
those "wild crosses."

Last year brought the first bloom of seedlings from crosses between 3/4-breds
and tetraploid arils. My favorite was from Ht-36-T (a rather dark blue-violet)
X Code of Silence. It was onco in form, with very pale blue standards, buff
falls, burgundy signal and diffuse gold beard. I hope that not only some of its
sibs, but others of the type will bloom this year, but so far no buds are
showing. These are primarily genetic experiments, in quest of knowledge, not
introductions.

The first 1/4-bred x tetraploid aril seedlings also bloomed last year. No
resemblance at all to my earlier TB x tet aril seedlings -- more like
conventional advanced-generation 1/2-breds. A lot more should bloom this year,
and I'm looking forward to seeing whether the trend continues or something quite
different turns up.

There's a new group coming on, from test crosses using tet aril pollen on
(1/4-bred X 1/2-bred) seedlings that have steadfastly refused to pod to 1/2-bred
pollen. (This test was inspired by success in crossing conventional 1/4-breds
with tet arils.) Interestingly enough, those that had podded to 1/2-bred pollen
did not respond to tet aril pollen.

The "wildest", though, is a seedling from At Last X Tribe of Judah. You know
that cross "shouldn't" take. I know it "shouldn't" take. But I'm certainly
not going to tell the iris that.

That's the weekend project -- I picked it up from the printer today. I noticed
that someone mentioned your list in a recent post. How do I get on your mailing
list? Is it e-mail or snail-mail?
