I asked Tom Little to put a picture of Morea Aristata (formerly Morea
Pavonia) on the cork board. This is a corm, not much bigger than a pea,
which likes wet winters and dry summers. Also, it is probably not hardy
past zone 7. According to my book it comes in red, purple, yellow and
white. The picture shows the yellow one.
John Weiler of Fresno wrote an informative article on this irid for the
Fall 1996 issue of SIGNA. He claims that this irid is almost extinct in
the wild and is trying to preserve it by passing out corms when he gives
his presentation on "IRIS Other Than Bearded". BTW, any iris club
needing a good speaker would be quite pleased with John as he is quite
good. John also donated the Morea Aristata seed to SIGNA.
The seed donatated to SIGNA is a white flower with turquoise basal
spots. I purchased some of this seed and it has started to germinate.
You need a magnifier to see the tiny grass like growth. I also planted
some of the corms last fall. They grew tall, about 1 foot long, grassy
growth. No sign of any blooms.
I don't know if Tom will post the picture or not, buy I guess he will
let me know. If he doesn't then I will send the picture privately to
those who requested it.
