subtleties of plicatas

It seems to me that there are lots and lots of purple plicatas on the market,
especially from eastern hybridizers. From the descriptions, they all sound
pretty much the same, or rather pretty much on a continuum from solid banded
to stitched or dotted and from pale blue to dark purple. Would someone who
is a connoisseur of such irises please talk a bit about why there are so many
of them? Are hybridizers searching for some kind of perfection that isn't
currently available in this color pattern? Is an improvement in
gardenability the motivation for continuing to hybridize for these or is
there some color break or other quality out there?
As I recall, we had some discussion that some of these patterns represent
different genetic makeup, so are these plicatas adventures along the way to
something else (e.g., pink ground plicatas in the east)?
