Dear Listers,
Most of you know that I'm in the process of finishing up a book on
iris-gardening for beginners, to be published next year by Taunton Press.
The Press has engaged the well-known horticultural photographer Roger Foley
of Arlington , VA, to do the principal photgraphy.
Now we are searching for gardens in which we can take photographs!
The gardens have to be in a place that we can reach rather easily by car on
short notice. My guess is that we are limited to the area between
Gettysburg PA and Charlotte NC on a north-south reach, and west perhaps to
Charleston WVa or (to stretch it) Cleveland OH.
Since this book will emphasize irises as garden plants, we are especially
looking for gardens where irises have been integrated into perennial
borders, rock gardens, pool or bog plantings, and the like. We want to
show as many different types of irises as we can (TBs, Siberians, JI, etc.)
growing in context with other plants. And of course we will also be
including some plant portraits, or mug shots.
In the next few weeks I will be going through the chapters making out the
illustration plan. This will give us a list of the pictures we would hope
to include. It would be immensely helpful if you could send me an OFF LIST
reply (see address above) with a brief description of your garden and its
setting and the kinds of irises you grow. If you have snapshots or slides
of your garden, this would be very helpful, too. As the blooming season
seems to be rushing upon us, it has become urgent to get this information.
I've already contacted some of you and will be in touch with others,
counting on your generosity and gardening skill to help make the new book
something really special. Anyone who lets us into their garden will be
credited in the book, and will get a free signed copy.
Remember, please reply OFF LIST to my e-mail address above, or to the
mailing address below.
Best wishes, Bill
