Vernon,
     To the best of my knowledge, Lime is toxic to Japanese Irises.  As to
why, I don't know.  I have some Japanese Irises in a bed that is near the
foundation of the house.  The soil is acidic, but I have to use an acid
based fertilizer to counter the effects of the Lime.  Also, in areas in
which the water supply is alkaline, be sure to use acid based fertilizers
to counter the effect of the Alkalinity.  
     Hopefully, one of our members more experienced with genetics and plant
physiology could tell us why Lime is fatal to Japanese Irises.
