Most authorities  advise that Cygon should be used as a borer control when
irises are just starting new growth, than two weeks later, then---to be
certain---maybe two weeks later.  Although Cygon is a systemic, it is a very
short-lived systemic---but for borer control it must be present when the
borers first hatch.  As the borers grow they seem to be less susceptible to
the toxic properties of Cygon.  Of course, later spraying of Cygon might
control other insect pests.  

I usually spray once---at most twice.  The only time it has not worked has
been when I could not get out to spray it on when we had a very early
spring---it is, after all, the weather that determines when the borers hatch.
 They are intelligent, 'tis true.  But they have not yet been able to tell
