I can see a good argument brewing on this subject.
I support the idea of plant breeders rights to help fund and reward
hybridisers. However, I see no practical way that they could be applied to
irises other than by gentleman's agreements - say exclusive introduction
rights at the rate of $5 per rhizome sold for a new variety. Given this type
of scheme, nurseries might then prove to be reluctant to introduce a new
variety that had not been properly trialled first - which would be no bad
thing.
