Thanks to Rick, Sharon, Clarence and any others whom I may have missed.
I can grow arilbreds here beside the TBs and they do fine (mostly). I do
keep trying to grow Arils well also and just tend to plant the arilbreds by
the arils so the arilbreds tend to get what the arils get which isn't much
water. Things were going great until two years ago a neighbor's herd of
sheep spent a night in the aril patch and I still haven't got everything
sorted out from that mess.
The soil here is extremly well drained. We can actually till about 2 days
after the snow is gone. The pH is about 6.8, perhaps because there has been
considerable sawdust and hog fuel go into it over time.
In retrospect, it is probably that relatively high pH which caused the LAs
to be erratic bloomers. It seems that it was not water, if I interpret some
of the comments correctly. They were kept under a mulch. frustrating, but I
will probably take another run at them someday and pay more attention to
some of the variables.
An I. atrorurpurea seed germinated this morning. Not as exciting as if it
were an Onco but small triumphs are welcome while there is about 16" of snow
on the ground yet.
Cheers,
John Montgomery
