My personal experience is limited to the seedlings I started last spring
(courtesy Sharon Mc). They germinated like mad, then gradually melted in
rhythm with the alternating heavy rains and dry spells. By melted, I mean
the growing leaf blades turned darkly transluscent about half way up the
blade, then rotted. None died. I set about 12 of them out in the garden
rows (they were probably too small to transplant). Now 2 of them are
growing. The humidity stays up near total saturation for a large part of the
summer - good environment for every kind of rot organism and fungus. This is
the allergy capital of the world.
Other growers tell me they rot - I had always assumed it was our old friend
Erwinia (soft rot).
